Research Meeting "Seminar
on science and technology for learning" a la
University of the Sacred Heart de Tokyo. Va presentar les recerques i
projectes del GRAI.

Last
week, Ester Miquel from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Catalonia),
and a member of the Research Group on Peer Learning (GRAI), was in Japan,
invited by Professor Hajime Shirouzu, Director of the Department for
Elementary and Secondary Education Research at the National Institute for
Educational Policy Research (NIER) of the Ministry of Education. She took part
in the Research Meeting “Seminar
on science and technology for learning” at the University of the Sacred Heart in
Tokyo, where she presented GRAI’s research and projects.
She also
became acquainted with the work carried out by Professor Shirouzu and
researchers from his team (Moegi Saito and Shinya Iikubo) at the “Nahomi
Institute for the Learning Sciences”, which he also directs, with the
involvement of master’s students and collaborators. The institute took over the learning sciences project, CoREF project from the University of Tokyo.

Their
research focuses on supporting teachers’ professional learning through
collaborative Lesson Study. Specifically, they support the implementation
of the “Knowledge Constructive Jigsaw” method in the classroom, with a
focus on solving challenges cooperatively. Over the past 16 years, they have
built a network of 2,000 teachers across different cities in Japan, together
with researchers and policymakers. They have developed technological tools
that, thanks to AI, can analyze in real time how students learn through the
cooperative dialogues that take place during the lesson, thereby supporting
teachers’ reflection on classroom practice and informing future
decision-making. At the same time, other technological tools also allow them to
work and develop the Network.
The
trip also included a visit to Bunan High School in Tokyo, and to Hitachi City
Education Plaza, where it was possible to observe the development of a full
lesson, starting with the formulation of a research question (the
challenge), followed by the use of the “Knowledge Constructive Jigsaw” method, concluding
with participation in the post-lesson discussion between the lead
teacher and the observers, following the Lesson Study methodology.
A
highly inspiring trip that made it possible to identify numerous shared points
between the two research teams and, above all, highlighted the potential of
technology to advance the design and development of environments that foster
peer learning among both students and teachers through collaborative research.
